Solid biofuels consist of wood based and culm shaped fuels (straw). They occur as residues at primary production, during further processing in forestry and agriculture, or can be planted as perennial energy plants.
Thirty-three percent of Thuringia is covered by forest, which means that it is one of the most densely wooded regions/states of Germany. In Thuringia, the highest percentage of primary energy production comes from solid biofuels. 

Common solid biofuels:

·        Forest wood,

·        Recycled wood of material utilization processes,

·        Residue of the wood processing industry,

·        Wood from landscape work,

·        Wood from short rotation forestry,

·        Culm shaped material from agricultural production.

The most important trade sizes for energetic use of woods are split logs, wood pellets and wood chips.
